Schengen Visa for Christmas 2026: Is It Too Late to Apply?
· 8 min read · By the Travlys visa team
A late-October or November application can still work for a December Europe trip. Here are the real timelines, the main-destination rule, the documents that matter and your backup options.
Yes, you can usually still get a Schengen visa for a Christmas or New Year 2026 trip if you apply in late October or the first half of November. The legal cut-off is 15 calendar days before you travel, and most decisions come within 15 days, but they can take up to 45. The real risk is the appointment wait, so book a slot this week and apply to the country where you will spend the most nights.
At a glance: Earliest you can apply: 6 months before travel. Latest you can apply: 15 calendar days before travel. Standard decision time: 15 calendar days, extendable to 45 in individual cases. Fee: €90 for adults, €45 for children aged 6 to under 12, plus the VFS service charge. Which country: Main destination (most nights); if equal, the first Schengen country you enter. Insurance: At least €30,000 medical cover. At the border: EES biometric registration, fully live since 10 April 2026, with no passport stamps. Safe target for a late-December trip: submit by mid-November.
Work backwards from your flight date
The 15-day rule is a minimum, not a plan. The 15-day decision clock starts when the consulate receives your file, not when you hand it in at VFS. Germany's missions in India say that transfer can take up to six working days. Norway asks applicants outside Delhi to allow 4 to 6 extra days for transport.
- Flying 20 December: the legal last day to apply is 5 December. A safer target is 15 to 20 November.
- Flying 27 December for New Year: the last day is 12 December. A safer target is 20 to 25 November.
- Add a margin for holidays: the European Commission advises taking national holidays into account, both in the destination country and where you apply. Many consulates work reduced hours over Christmas.
If your file goes in during the first week of December, you can still get the visa, but you are relying on a fast decision with no room for a request for extra documents.
How long are appointment waits?
No embassy publishes an official appointment wait for India, and we could not verify which countries have earlier slots this season. Third-party slot trackers give snapshots that change by the hour. Treat them as hints, not facts.
- Book directly on the official VFS site for the country you are applying to. NetherlandsWorldwide warns against booking through intermediaries.
- NetherlandsWorldwide also asks for a separate appointment for each traveller, including children.
- Check other cities. Germany's mission says Schengen appointments can be booked at any of its VFS centres in India regardless of where you live; other countries may restrict this, so read their page.
Which country to apply to: main destination and first entry
You apply to the country of your main destination. For a holiday, that is the country where you spend the most nights. If nights are equal, you apply to the country whose external Schengen border you cross first.
- 4 nights Paris + 3 nights Switzerland: apply to France.
- 3 nights Lucerne + 2 nights Interlaken + 2 nights Paris: Switzerland has 5 nights, so apply to Switzerland. Switzerland is in Schengen.
- 3 nights Vienna + 3 nights Prague, flying into Vienna: equal nights and Austria is your first entry, so apply to Austria.
- 4 nights Prague + 2 nights Vienna: apply to the Czech Republic.
For Swiss trips, the Swiss Embassy in India says processing takes 7 to 10 calendar days after you submit at a VFS centre, though a decision can take up to 15 days or longer in some cases.
Why shopping for an easier embassy backfires
It is tempting to apply to whichever country has a slot next week and then spend most of the trip elsewhere. Do not do it.
- NetherlandsWorldwide says an application made to a country that is not your main purpose of travel will be rejected.
- The Swedish Embassy in New Delhi warns it will refuse an application if it suspects the stated purpose is not the real one.
- Border guards can ask for your bookings, and the EES now records where and when you enter and leave.
- A refusal is recorded in the shared Schengen visa system, and consulates see it when you apply again.
If your plans genuinely change, change the bookings first, then apply to the country that matches them.
Documents that matter for a December trip
Each consulate has its own checklist. The Netherlands' India checklist is typical of what they look for.
- Leave letter: a recent letter from your employer approving leave for the exact dates, with three months of payslips. Year-end leave approvals often come late, so ask HR now.
- Money: three months of personal bank statements stamped and signed by the bank, or income tax returns for the last two years. Self-employed applicants also need GST and company documents.
- Bookings: a return flight reservation (a paid ticket is not required) and hotel bookings for every night in every country. Choose refundable rates; December prices are high.
- Insurance: at least €30,000 medical cover, valid in all Schengen countries, for the whole stay.
- Cover letter: day-by-day plan, who you travel with, and how you move between countries.
- Passport: issued within the last 10 years, with two blank pages and valid at least three months after you leave Schengen.
Popular December trips and the visa each one needs
- Paris for New Year's Eve: French visa if France has most nights.
- Vienna and Salzburg Christmas markets: Austrian visa.
- Prague and Budapest: apply to whichever country has more nights.
- Switzerland with a short Paris or Milan add-on: Swiss visa, as long as Switzerland has the most nights.
- Amsterdam with Brussels or Paris: Dutch visa if the Netherlands has the most nights.
Most Christmas markets in Central Europe run from mid or late November to around Christmas, and a few stay open into early January. Check the city's official tourism site for exact dates before you build the itinerary.
EES at the border
The EU's Entry/Exit System has been fully live at Schengen external borders since 10 April 2026. On your first entry, your face image is taken and your visa fingerprints are checked, and passports are no longer stamped. Reports from April and the summer described long queues at some big airports. In late December, allow extra time at your first Schengen airport and carry copies of your hotel bookings, return ticket and insurance.
What to do if you cannot get a slot
Use a visa you already hold
If you have a valid multiple-entry Schengen visa from an earlier trip, the European Commission says a Schengen visa is generally valid for all Schengen countries. You can use it for this trip as long as it is still valid on your return date and you stay within 90 days in any 180.
Move the trip to January or February
You can apply up to six months ahead. A February Europe trip filed in November has plenty of room, and hotels cost less after New Year.
Choose an easier-visa destination for December
- Thailand: 30 days visa-free for Indian tourists since 15 September 2026, with the free online TDAC arrival card.
- Malaysia: 30 days visa-free until 31 December 2026 unless extended, with the MDAC arrival card. Check before you book if you land close to that date.
- Vietnam: e-visa at USD 25 for single entry, processed within three working days of a complete application.
- Georgia: e-visa at USD 20 plus a 2% service fee, at least five working days. If you hold a valid US, UK or Schengen visa, you may enter visa-free. Insurance is compulsory.
- Sri Lanka: free online ETA for 30 days.
Who should apply now, and who should wait
- Apply now: your leave is approved, you know your main destination, and your passport and finances are in order.
- Wait for January or February: your leave is not confirmed, you are a first-time applicant with thin documents, or your best appointment is in December.

Frequently asked questions
Can I still get a Schengen visa for Christmas if I apply in November?
Yes, in most cases, if you apply by mid-November. Schengen rules let you apply up to 15 calendar days before travel, and most decisions come within 15 days. Decisions can take up to 45 days, and Christmas holidays slow consulates down, so the earlier you submit, the safer you are. The hardest part is usually getting a VFS appointment.
What is the last date to apply for a Schengen visa for a 20 December trip?
The legal last date is 5 December 2026, which is 15 calendar days before travel. That is too tight to rely on, because the decision clock starts only when the consulate receives your file. Aim to submit by 15 to 20 November, which leaves time for a standard 15-day decision, transport between VFS and the consulate, and holiday closures.
Which Schengen country should I apply to for Paris and Switzerland?
Apply to the country where you spend the most nights. Four nights in Paris and three in Switzerland means a French visa. Five nights in Switzerland and two in Paris means a Swiss visa. If the nights are equal, apply to the country whose Schengen border you cross first. Switzerland is part of the Schengen area, so one visa covers both.
Can I apply to a different Schengen country because it has earlier appointments?
No, you should not. NetherlandsWorldwide says an application made to a country that is not your main purpose of travel will be rejected, and the Swedish Embassy warns it refuses applications where the stated purpose does not match. A refusal stays on your record. If your plans genuinely change, change the bookings first and apply to the country that matches.
Do I need to give fingerprints at the European border under EES?
Yes, the Entry/Exit System has been fully live since 10 April 2026. When you first enter Schengen, your face image is taken and your fingerprints are checked against those you gave for the visa. Passports are no longer stamped. Some airports had long queues after the launch, so allow extra time at your first Schengen airport in December.
What can I do if I cannot get a Schengen appointment in time?
Use a valid multiple-entry Schengen visa if you already hold one, move the trip to January or February, or pick an easier-visa destination for December. Thailand gives Indians 30 days visa-free, Malaysia is visa-free until 31 December 2026, Vietnam has a USD 25 e-visa, Georgia has an e-visa, and Sri Lanka's tourist ETA is free.
