US Visa Appointment Wait Time in India: October 2026 Update
· 8 min read · By the Travlys visa team
City-wise US visa interview waits in India for late October 2026, what the 346-day audit figure means, and the only legitimate ways to get an earlier date.
As of the State Department's update of 21 October 2026, the estimated wait for a first US B1/B2 visitor visa interview in India runs from 7.5 months in Chennai to 12 months in Mumbai, while student (F, M, J) visas wait 1 to 4 months. The only legitimate ways to get an earlier date are the interview waiver for recent B1/B2 renewals, an approved expedited (emergency) request, or catching released slots in the official system. Paid slot-booking bots break the scheduling rules and have led to cancelled appointments.
At a glance: B1/B2 wait (21 Oct 2026): Mumbai 12 months, New Delhi 11, Hyderabad 10.5, Kolkata 8.5, Chennai 7.5. Student F/M/J wait: 1 to 4 months. Audit figure: 346 days average NIV interview wait in India in FY2025 (GAO, 28 Sept 2026). Interview waiver: mainly full-validity B1/B2 renewals within 12 months of expiry. Expedite requests: maximum two, with proof of urgency. Reschedules: limited; cancelling after the limit voids your fee. Where to apply: your country of nationality or residence. US visa wait times by city (late October 2026)
The State Department publishes estimated waits for the next available interview at each post and updates them monthly. The figures below are from the 21 October 2026 update, as reported by Business Today. Check the live tool on travel.state.gov before you plan, because the numbers move.
- Mumbai: B1/B2 12 months; students 4 months; work (H, L, O, P, Q) 2 months.
- New Delhi: B1/B2 11 months; students 3 months; work 3.5 months.
- Hyderabad: B1/B2 10.5 months; students 1 month; work 6.5 months.
- Kolkata: B1/B2 8.5 months; students 2.5 months; work 1 month.
- Chennai: B1/B2 7.5 months; students 3.5 months; work 2.5 months.
One month earlier, the 17 September update showed Hyderabad at 12 months and Kolkata at 6.5 months. That swing is normal. These are estimates, not promises, and interview-waiver drop-off appointments are not counted in them. The waiting period is also separate from processing after the interview, which the official appointment site says is typically seven to ten working days, longer for some cases.
What the 346-day audit figure actually means
On 28 September 2026 the US Government Accountability Office (GAO) published report GAO-26-107902 on nonimmigrant visa staffing. It put India's weighted average interview wait at 346 days in fiscal year 2025, the longest of the four countries it examined (Mexico 283, China 34, Brazil 32).
The report found 68 consular officers working on nonimmigrant visas in India against 1,455,255 applications, about 21,401 per officer. Worldwide, officers on these visas fell from 1,342 in FY2024 to 904 in FY2025 due to hiring freezes and attrition. GAO recommended that the State Department consistently run its staffing review; the department neither agreed nor disagreed.
Keep two things in mind. The 346 days is a past average for FY2025, not today's wait. And it measures time to get an interview, not time to get a visa decision.
Route 1: the interview waiver (drop-box)
From 2 September 2025 the State Department cut back interview waivers sharply. All nonimmigrant applicants, including children under 14 and adults over 79, now generally need an in-person interview. The main exception for Indian travellers is a B1/B2 renewal. According to the official India appointment site, you may qualify if you meet all of these:
- You are renewing a full-validity B1, B2 or B1/B2 visa that is still valid or expired within the past 12 months.
- You were at least 18 when that visa was issued.
- All 10 fingerprints were taken when the last visa was issued.
- The old visa was not lost, stolen, revoked or cancelled, and you have never been refused, unless the refusal was overcome or waived.
- You apply in your consular district of residence and are physically in India during the process.
- Your passport is valid at least 15 calendar days beyond the drop-off date.
Timing matters. Your drop-off appointment must be at least 15 calendar days before the 12-month mark after expiry, or you will be moved to a regular interview. Allow up to three weeks after drop-off for processing, and do not book tickets until the visa is in hand. A consular officer can still call you for an interview.
Route 2: an expedited (emergency) appointment
You can ask for an earlier date only after you have filled the DS-160, paid the visa fee and booked the first available regular appointment. When you book, the screen shows the earliest date, which already includes expedited slots. If that date still does not work, submit the Expedited Request Form in the official system. The US Embassy says slots are very limited and it cannot accommodate all travellers, even with time-sensitive trips.
What qualifies, and the proof that works
- Medical: a letter from your doctor in India, a letter from the US hospital agreeing to treat you with an approximate cost, and proof of how you will pay.
- Funeral or death: a funeral director's letter with the deceased's details and date, plus proof the person was an immediate family member (parent, sibling or child).
- Urgent business: a letter from the US company explaining the urgency and the significant loss of opportunity, or training of three months or less with letters from both employers.
- Students and exchange visitors: considered only in exceptional circumstances, with the original I-20 or DS-2019.
- ESTA denied: for Visa Waiver Program nationals only, which does not apply to Indian passport holders.
What does not qualify
Weddings, graduation ceremonies, helping a pregnant relative, annual conferences and last-minute tourism. You get only two expedite requests, so do not waste one on a trip that does not fit. Do not cancel your existing appointment while waiting. The reply comes by email from do-not-reply@usvisascheduling.com, so check spam. Exaggerating urgency is noted on your file and can hurt your visa outcome.
Route 3: rescheduling smartly
Slots open up as others cancel and as posts release new blocks, so checking the official system regularly does work. But reschedules are limited. The US Mission in India said that from 1 January 2025 you can reschedule once without paying again. After the limit, the system lets you only attend or cancel. Cancelling voids your fee.
- Use your reschedule only for a clearly better date, not a few days' gain.
- Your Visa Application Centre (biometrics) appointment must be at least two business days before the interview.
- If you cannot attend, cancel at least two business days ahead to avoid being marked a no-show.
- Look at all five posts in India. Kolkata and Chennai have been quicker for B1/B2 than Mumbai and Delhi.
Apply in India, not abroad
Since 6 September 2025, the State Department has told nonimmigrant applicants to book interviews in their country of nationality or legal residence. The US Embassy in India repeats this on its visa page. The old trick of flying to Dubai, Bangkok or Singapore for a faster interview is generally no longer an option for Indians living in India. Fees are also non-transferable: a fee paid in India works only for appointments in India.
Why paid slot-booking bots are a bad bet
The official site's terms ban access through bots, crawlers or scripts and limit daily login attempts, with automatic temporary suspensions. If the system detects automation tools, it shows an 'Access limitation' warning and asks you to remove them and wait at least 24 hours. In March 2025 the US Mission in India cancelled about 2,000 appointments made by bots and suspended the scheduling privileges of the linked accounts. The applicant, not the agent, loses the slot. You also hand your login and DS-160 details to a stranger.
Students: book early, but do not count on an expedite
Student waits are far shorter right now, at 1 to 4 months. A US student visa can be issued up to 365 days before your programme start date, but you can enter the US no more than 30 days before it. Emergency requests for students are considered only in exceptional cases, so book as soon as you have your I-20. F, M and J applicants must also set social media accounts to public, as the US Embassy notice says. Spring 2027 starters should book now.
Who should and should not wait it out
If your trip is a year away, book the earliest regular date now and keep checking for openings. If you hold a recently expired full-validity B1/B2 visa, check the waiver rules first, since that can save months. If your reason is a wedding or a holiday, an expedite request will be refused. Frequently asked questions
What is the current US visa interview wait time in India?
As of the State Department update of 21 October 2026, the estimated wait for a B1/B2 visitor visa interview is 12 months in Mumbai, 11 in New Delhi, 10.5 in Hyderabad, 8.5 in Kolkata and 7.5 in Chennai. Student (F, M, J) waits are 1 to 4 months. These are estimates of the next available slot, updated monthly, not guaranteed dates.
How can I get an earlier US visa appointment in India?
There are three legitimate routes. If you are renewing a full-validity B1/B2 visa that expired within the last 12 months, you may qualify for the interview waiver. If you have a genuine emergency, you can request an expedited appointment after booking a regular one. Otherwise, check the official scheduling system regularly for released slots and use your limited reschedules carefully. Paid bots and agents break the rules.
Who qualifies for an emergency US visa appointment in India?
Only applicants with urgent, unforeseen travel: urgent medical treatment, the funeral of an immediate family member in the US, urgent business that could not be predicted, students in exceptional cases, or travellers whose ESTA was denied. You need documents proving the urgency. Weddings, graduations, helping a pregnant relative, annual conferences and last-minute tourism do not qualify. You can submit only two expedite requests.
Who can skip the US visa interview in 2026?
Mainly people renewing a full-validity B1, B2 or B1/B2 visa that is still valid or expired within the past 12 months, who were at least 18 when it was issued. You must also apply in India, have had all 10 fingerprints taken last time, have no unresolved refusals, and your old visa must not be lost, stolen or cancelled. Since 2 September 2025, children under 14 and adults over 79 generally need an interview.
How many times can I reschedule a US visa appointment in India?
Only a limited number of times without penalty. The US Mission in India said from 1 January 2025 you can reschedule once for free. After you reach the limit, the system lets you either attend or cancel. If you cancel, your fee becomes invalid and you must pay a new visa fee to book again. Cancel at least two business days before to avoid being marked a no-show.
Can I apply for a US visa in Dubai or another country to get a faster date?
Generally no. Since 6 September 2025, the State Department has directed nonimmigrant visa applicants to schedule interviews in their country of nationality or legal residence. An Indian citizen living in India should apply in India. Visa fees paid in India are valid only for appointments in India and cannot be transferred to another country.
