Visa-Free Countries for Indians 2026: The Complete List

· 9 min read · By the Travlys visa team

The full late-2026 list of visa-free, visa on arrival, ETA and e-visa destinations for Indian passport holders, India's Henley Passport Index rank, and every rule change this year.

In late 2026, Indian passport holders can enter about 55 destinations without arranging a visa in advance, counting visa-free, visa on arrival and ETA entries. India sits 84th in the October 2026 Henley Passport Index. Popular visa-free options include Nepal, Bhutan, Thailand (30 days), Malaysia (30 days, until 31 December 2026), Mauritius, Fiji and Kazakhstan (14 days), and dozens more countries offer an online e-visa.

At a glance: Henley rank: 84th, 55 destinations (October 2026 edition, dated 9 October 2026). Biggest 2026 changes: Thailand cut to 30 days visa-free from 15 September; Malaysia visa-free until 31 December 2026; Sri Lanka ETA free from 25 May; Iran visa waiver suspended since 22 November 2025. Still need a visa in advance: US, UK, Canada, Schengen, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, and the UAE unless you qualify for its visa on arrival.

India's passport ranking in 2026

The Henley Passport Index counts destinations you can enter without a visa approved in advance. That means visa-free entry, visa on arrival and electronic travel authorisations (ETAs). It does not count e-visas.

India's position moved a lot this year. Reports put it around 80th in January and 75th in February. The July 2026 edition, released on 21 July, put India 81st with 55 destinations after Cape Verde dropped visa on arrival. The October 2026 edition, dated 9 October, puts India 84th, tied with Algeria and Mauritania, with 55 destinations. These October figures come from Business Today and TravelBiz Monitor. We could not view them on Henley & Partners' own website.

A lower rank does not always mean fewer options for you. It often reflects other passports gaining access faster.

What the categories mean

  • Visa-free: you show your passport, return ticket and proof of stay at immigration. No fee, no form in advance (some countries ask for a free digital arrival card).
  • Visa on arrival: you get the visa at the airport or border, usually for a fee. Some countries let you buy it online first.
  • ETA or pre-registration: a short online authorisation you must get before flying. It is not a full visa, but airlines will check it.
  • E-visa: a full visa you apply for online and must have approved before you travel.

  • Turkey: e-visa instead of a sticker visa.
  • Georgia: news reports say a valid US, UK, Schengen or Japan visa or residence permit lets you enter without a Georgian visa for up to 90 days in 180.

What changed in 2026

  • Thailand: visa-free stay cut from 60 to 30 days from 15 September 2026. Anyone needing longer must get a visa.
  • Malaysia: 30-day visa-free entry runs until 31 December 2026. No extension beyond that had been announced when we checked.
  • Sri Lanka: tourist ETA became free for Indians on 25 May 2026. The ETA itself is still compulsory.
  • Iran: visa-free entry for Indians was suspended from 22 November 2025, according to India's Ministry of External Affairs. In July 2026 the Embassy of India in Tehran also advised Indians to postpone travel to Iran.
  • Uzbekistan: President Mirziyoyev announced a 30-day visa-free regime for Indians on 30 August 2026. The official notice we found covers only holders of qualifying foreign visas, from 1 September 2026. Others should keep using the e-visa.
  • Cape Verde: visa on arrival for Indians is reported to have ended, which cut India's Henley count in July 2026. Get a visa before travel.
  • Bolivia: reported to have moved Indians from visa on arrival to an e-visa.
  • UAE: ICP widened its visa-on-arrival scheme in June 2026 and still lists India. Some July 2026 news reports said UK-only holders would lose access, but official pages still list the UK.
  • Laos: we saw claims that visa on arrival ended for Indians but could not confirm them from an official source. Current travel guides still list both visa on arrival and e-visa. Apply for the e-visa to be safe.

Check before you book: Visa rules change with little notice, and a destination can drop off this list overnight. Before you buy flights, check the official immigration website or embassy of the country you are visiting. Visa-free does not mean entry is guaranteed: officers can still ask for a return ticket, hotel booking and proof of funds, and can refuse entry.

Countries where Indians need a visa in advance

The big long-haul destinations still need a full visa approved before you travel. These include the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, the Schengen countries, Australia, New Zealand and Singapore. The UAE also needs one unless you qualify for its visa on arrival. These are the applications where file quality decides the outcome.

Frequently asked questions

How many countries can Indians visit without a visa in 2026?

About 55, counting visa-free, visa on arrival and ETA entries. That is the figure for the October 2026 Henley Passport Index, as reported by Business Today and TravelBiz Monitor. Only about half of these are truly visa-free with nothing to apply for. The rest need a visa on arrival or an online authorisation. E-visa countries are not counted in the 55.

What is India's passport rank in 2026?

India is 84th in the October 2026 Henley Passport Index, tied with Algeria and Mauritania, with 55 destinations. The rank moved during the year: about 80th in January, 75th in February, and 81st in the July 2026 edition. The October figure comes from Indian news reports of the edition dated 9 October 2026; we could not view it on Henley's own website.

Is Thailand visa-free for Indians in 2026?

Yes, for 30 days. From 15 September 2026, Indian ordinary passport holders can enter Thailand visa-free for tourism for up to 30 days, according to the Royal Thai Embassy in New Delhi. The earlier 60-day visa-free stay has ended. You still need the Thailand Digital Arrival Card. For longer stays, work or study, get the right visa before you fly.

Is Malaysia still visa-free for Indians?

Yes, until 31 December 2026. Malaysia lets Indian citizens enter without a visa for up to 30 days for purposes other than work or study. You must submit the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card before arrival and may be asked for a return ticket and hotel booking. We found no announcement yet on what happens after 31 December, so check before booking a 2027 trip.

Do Indians need a visa for Sri Lanka in 2026?

You need an ETA, but it is free. Since 25 May 2026, Sri Lanka gives Indian nationals a free tourist ETA valid for 30 days with double entry, according to the official ETA portal. You must still apply online at eta.gov.lk before you travel. Staying beyond 30 days needs an extension, which carries a fee.

Which countries need a visa in advance for Indians?

Most of the popular long-haul destinations. The United States, United Kingdom, Canada, the Schengen countries, Australia, New Zealand and Singapore all need a visa approved before travel. The UAE also needs one unless you qualify for its visa on arrival with a US, UK or EU visa or a listed residence permit. Travlys files applications for all of these.
