Phu Quoc Visa Free for Indians: The 30-Day Rule in 2026

· 7 min read · By the Travlys visa team

Indians can visit Vietnam's Phu Quoc island without a visa for up to 30 days, but only if they enter directly and never leave the island. Here is how the rule works, when you need an e-visa, and the new direct flight from Ahmedabad.

Yes. Indian passport holders can visit Phu Quoc island in Vietnam without a visa for up to 30 days, as long as Phu Quoc is the only place in Vietnam they visit and they arrive from abroad through the island's international airport or seaport. If your route makes you clear immigration in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, or you want to see any part of mainland Vietnam, you need a Vietnam e-visa.

At a glance: Visa for Phu Quoc only: Not needed, up to 30 days. Who qualifies: All foreign passport holders, including Indians. Entry point: Phu Quoc International Airport or the island's international seaport. Transit inside Vietnam: Allowed only if you stay in the international transit area. Mainland Vietnam: Needs a Vietnam e-visa (evisa.gov.vn). Proof needed: Return or onward ticket leaving Phu Quoc within 30 days. Direct flight from India: Sun PhuQuoc Airways, Ahmedabad to Phu Quoc, from December 2026. Indian Embassy advice: Get a Vietnam visa anyway, even for an island-only trip.

Why Phu Quoc is suddenly on Indian itineraries

Phu Quoc has moved from a niche honeymoon pick to a mainstream winter option. Agoda data released on 27 October 2026 shows that searches by Indian travellers for Phu Quoc stays between 15 October and 30 November 2026 grew 124% compared with the same period last year. Searches for Vietnam as a whole grew 86% and Hanoi 94%.

Arrivals back this up. Vietnam received about 243,000 Indian tourists in the first quarter of 2026, up 69% year on year, according to Vietnam National Tourism Administration figures reported by VnExpress. Vietnam's state news agency reports that Phu Quoc alone received around 150,000 Indian visitors in 2025, even without a nonstop flight from India. The visa rule is a big part of the appeal: no application, no fee, no waiting.

Can Indians visit Phu Quoc without a visa?

Yes, for up to 30 days, if you enter Vietnam directly at Phu Quoc and stay only on the island. You will get a visa exemption stamp on arrival after showing proof that you will leave within 30 days. The moment your plan includes the mainland, or your route makes you clear immigration elsewhere in Vietnam first, you need an e-visa.

How the Phu Quoc visa exemption works

Vietnam has let foreigners, and Vietnamese people holding foreign passports, enter, stay in and leave Phu Quoc without a visa for stays of up to 30 days for more than a decade. It is an island-specific rule, separate from Vietnam's nationwide visa-free list, which does not include India. Vietnamese embassy guidance describes it as applying when Phu Quoc is your only destination in Vietnam.

  • Only destination: Phu Quoc must be the only place you visit in Vietnam on that trip.
  • Entry from abroad: You arrive on an international flight at Phu Quoc International Airport, or by sea through the island's international port.
  • Transit rule: If you change planes at another Vietnamese international airport, you must stay in its international transit area and not pass through immigration there.
  • Maximum stay: 30 days.
  • Proof of departure: A return or onward ticket leaving Phu Quoc within 30 days. Immigration may ask for it before stamping you in.
  • Passport: Carry a passport with at least six months' validity. Airlines commonly check this, and it is the safe standard for Vietnam.

One admin change you may notice: Kien Giang province merged into An Giang province on 1 July 2025, and Phu Quoc became a special zone of An Giang. Older pages still say Phu Quoc, Kien Giang. We found no change to the visa exemption linked to the merger.

What if you fly via Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City?

This is where most travellers get caught. On paper, the exemption still applies if you pass through another Vietnamese international airport and stay in its transit area before flying on to Phu Quoc. In practice, flights from Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City to Phu Quoc are domestic flights. On most such connections you collect your bags and clear immigration at the first airport. At that point you have entered mainland Vietnam, and you need a visa.

Before you book a connection through Vietnam, ask the airline in writing where you will clear immigration. If they cannot confirm that you stay airside and clear immigration only at Phu Quoc, get an e-visa. If you connect through a hub outside Vietnam, your flight into Phu Quoc is international and you clear immigration on the island, which keeps the exemption simple.

Flights from India to Phu Quoc this winter

The big news is the first nonstop route. Sun PhuQuoc Airways, a Vietnamese carrier, launches Ahmedabad to Phu Quoc flights in December 2026 on an Airbus A321neo. The first flight from Phu Quoc runs on 2 December, and the first from Ahmedabad leaves in the early hours of 3 December, which is why you will see both dates in news reports.

  • 9G314 Ahmedabad to Phu Quoc: departs 1:00 am, arrives 7:15 am local time, about 4 hours 45 minutes in the air.
  • 9G315 Phu Quoc to Ahmedabad: departs 7:35 pm, arrives 11:30 pm local time, about 5 hours 25 minutes.
  • Frequency: Five a week at launch (Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday, per reports), rising to daily from early February 2027, subject to the airline's schedule.

From Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Kolkata and other cities, we found no confirmed nonstop scheduled flight as of 29 October 2026, so plan on one stop. The Indian Embassy's advice: get a visa anyway

On 6 April 2026 the Embassy of India in Hanoi posted an advisory for Indians using the Phu Quoc exemption. It said the exemption allows travel and stay only within the island and does not permit entry into mainland Vietnam. It warned that a medical emergency or flight disruption could force you to Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi, and without a valid visa you could face delays in treatment and immigration trouble. Its recommendation: apply for the right Vietnamese visa before travelling, even for an island-only trip.

The advisory also covered lost passports. The Embassy aims to issue an emergency travel document the same day, but Vietnamese authorities usually take 3 to 5 working days to issue an exit permit, and you must stay in Vietnam until it comes through. Keep scans of your passport and visa pages in your email.

Exemption or e-visa: which suits you

  • Use the exemption if: you fly nonstop from Ahmedabad, or via a hub outside Vietnam, stay only on Phu Quoc, and are back home within 30 days.
  • Get an e-visa if: you connect through Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, want to add any mainland city, or are unsure about your route.
  • Strongly consider an e-visa if: you are travelling with elderly parents, young children or anyone with a medical condition, since a hospital transfer to the mainland is a real possibility.
  • E-visa basics: Vietnam issues e-visas to all nationalities through the official portal, evisa.gov.vn, valid for up to 90 days, single or multiple entry. Our Vietnam e-visa guide walks through the steps and fees. Use only the official portal; copycat sites charge more for the same visa.

Practical tips before you fly

  • Carry a printed copy of your return ticket and hotel booking. Airline check-in staff in India may ask for them before boarding a visa-free trip.
  • Plan to leave well inside 30 days. Do not count on extending the stay on the island.
  • You do not pay anyone for the Phu Quoc exemption. If a website charges a Phu Quoc visa fee for an island-only trip, you are paying for nothing.
  • Buy travel insurance that covers hospital treatment and medical transfer, given the Embassy's warning.
  • If you are combining Phu Quoc with Thailand or Malaysia, both are currently visa-free for Indians under their own rules; see our Thailand visa-free and Malaysia visa-free guides for the conditions.

Frequently asked questions

Do Indians need a visa for Phu Quoc?

No, not if Phu Quoc is the only place you visit in Vietnam and you stay 30 days or less. You must enter from abroad through the island's international airport or seaport and show a ticket leaving Phu Quoc within 30 days. If you plan to visit Hanoi, Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City or anywhere else on the mainland, you need a Vietnam e-visa before you travel.

Can I fly to Phu Quoc via Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi without a visa?

Only if you never clear immigration at the first airport and stay in its international transit area, which most domestic connections do not allow. Flights from Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City to Phu Quoc are domestic, so you usually pass through immigration on arrival in the first city. Then you have entered mainland Vietnam and need an e-visa. Ask your airline in writing before you book.

How long can I stay in Phu Quoc without a visa?

You can stay up to 30 days under the Phu Quoc visa exemption. Vietnamese embassy guidance says you must show proof, such as a return flight, that you will leave the island within 30 days to get the exemption stamp. If you think you may need longer, or may need to go to the mainland, apply for a Vietnam e-visa on evisa.gov.vn before you fly.

Is there a direct flight from India to Phu Quoc?

Yes, from Ahmedabad. Sun PhuQuoc Airways starts nonstop Ahmedabad to Phu Quoc flights in December 2026, five times a week, with plans to go daily from early February 2027. Flight 9G314 leaves Ahmedabad at 1:00 am and lands at 7:15 am local time. From other Indian cities you will need one stop, so check where you clear immigration.

Can I visit mainland Vietnam on the Phu Quoc visa exemption?

No. The exemption covers travel and stay on Phu Quoc island only. The Indian Embassy in Hanoi said so plainly in its April 2026 advisory. If you want to add Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Da Nang or Ho Chi Minh City, get a Vietnam e-visa covering your whole trip before you leave India.

Should I get a Vietnam e-visa even for a Phu Quoc-only trip?

The Indian Embassy in Hanoi recommends it. A medical emergency or a flight disruption could force you to travel to Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi, and without a visa that becomes an immigration problem. For a short island-only trip on a direct flight the exemption is legal, but an e-visa from evisa.gov.vn is cheap protection, especially for families travelling with older parents.
