When to Apply for a Visa from India: Country-by-Country Guide
· 8 min read · By the Travlys visa team
How early you should apply for a visa depends on the country: six months ahead for Schengen, three for the UK, and as soon as possible for the USA. Here are the earliest dates, sensible deadlines and current processing times for nine popular destinations.
Apply as early as the rules allow. For Indian travellers that means up to six months ahead for Schengen, three months ahead for the UK, and as soon as you know your plans for the USA, where interview waits now run close to a year at some posts. For Singapore, apply within 30 days of arrival, and for Japan within about three months, because applying too early can make the visa expire before you fly.
At a glance: USA: No earliest date; interview waits of roughly 7.5 to 12 months reported in October 2026. UK: Earliest 3 months before travel; decision usually within 3 weeks. Schengen: 6 months to 15 days before; 15 days standard, up to 45. Canada: About 29 days for India (IRCC, 14 October 2026). Australia: Check Home Affairs; recent reports around a month. Japan: Minimum 5 working days; single-entry visa valid 3 months from issue. Singapore: Within 30 days before arrival; about 3 working days. UAE: Usually a few working days through a sponsor. New Zealand: 80% decided within 2 weeks; busiest September to March.
How early should I apply for a visa?
As early as the destination allows, and never later than the processing time plus a few weeks of buffer. Some countries set an earliest date (UK, Schengen, Singapore) and some effectively set one through visa validity (Japan). For the USA, the bottleneck is the interview queue, so the right answer is now.
Country-by-country timing for Indian applicants
Each item shows the earliest you can apply, the latest sensible date, typical processing, and a peak-season warning. Processing times for Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the USA change weekly or monthly, so check the official page named in each item before you plan around a number.
- USA (B1/B2 visitor): Earliest: no fixed date, so book the interview as soon as you plan the trip. Latest sensible: 9 to 12 months before travel if you apply in Mumbai or New Delhi. Typical: the wait is the appointment. State Department estimates updated on 21 October 2026, as reported by Business Today, were about 12 months in Mumbai, 11 in New Delhi, 10.5 in Hyderabad, 8.5 in Kolkata and 7.5 in Chennai. Peak warning: student visa season in summer squeezes slots. Check the wait-times tool on travel.state.gov.
- UK (Standard Visitor): Earliest: 3 months before you travel. Latest sensible: 6 to 8 weeks before, to cover the biometrics appointment and a possible request for more documents. Typical: usually a decision within 3 weeks; the fee is £135 for up to 6 months. Peak warning: May to August is the busiest stretch, so apply the day your three-month window opens. GOV.UK lists faster decision options where available.
- Schengen (short stay): Earliest: 6 months before travel. Latest: as a rule 15 calendar days before, under the EU Visa Code. Latest sensible: 6 to 8 weeks before, because appointment slots in India go first. Typical: 15 days, extendable to 45 days if more checks are needed; the fee is €90 for adults. Peak warning: April to June for summer trips and October to November for Christmas trips.
- Canada (visitor visa): Earliest: no fixed date. Latest sensible: 2 to 3 months before travel. Typical: IRCC's estimate for visitor visas from India was 29 days on 14 October 2026, down from 30 days a week earlier, counted from receipt of a complete application, with biometrics on top. Peak warning: summer and December family visits. IRCC updates the estimate weekly on its processing times page.
- Australia (Visitor subclass 600, Tourist stream): Earliest: no fixed date. Latest sensible: 6 to 8 weeks before travel. Typical: Home Affairs publishes global processing times monthly; recent reports put 90% of applications decided within about a month, but check the current figure. See our guide on Australia visa biometrics in India for the extra appointment step. Peak warning: December and January.
- Japan (short-term stay): Earliest: about 3 months before travel, because a single-entry visa is valid for 3 months from the date of issue. Latest sensible: 3 to 4 weeks before. Typical: a minimum of 5 working days from submission, according to Japan's missions in India, longer in busy periods. Peak warning: cherry blossom season (March to April) and autumn colours (October to November).
- Singapore: Earliest: ICA advises applying within 30 days before arrival. Latest sensible: 2 weeks before. Typical: 3 working days, not counting the day of submission, though some take longer; the processing fee is S$30. Peak warning: May to June school holidays and December.
- UAE (tourist visa): Earliest: apply once your dates are fixed, since tourist visas carry a limited window to enter. Latest sensible: 1 to 2 weeks before. Typical: usually a few working days through an airline, hotel, travel agent or the ICP portal; we could not confirm a published official processing time. Peak warning: New Year, Eid and the Dubai Shopping Festival season. If you hold a valid US visa or UK or EU residence, you may qualify for visa on arrival instead.
- New Zealand (Visitor Visa): Earliest: no fixed date; Immigration New Zealand says to submit as soon as possible. Latest sensible: 6 weeks before travel. Typical: 80% of applications decided within 2 weeks; fees start from NZD 441. Peak warning: INZ says September to March is its busiest period, especially for Christmas travel.
Peak seasons in India: when to add extra weeks
Diwali and the October to November break
Diwali falls in early November this year. If you are reading this with no visa yet, a Schengen, UK or US trip for Diwali is unrealistic. Look at options that need little or no paperwork: Thailand's 30-day visa-free entry, Malaysia's visa-free entry until 31 December 2026, Sri Lanka's free ETA and the Phu Quoc exemption. For Diwali 2027, start Schengen and UK applications by August and US interviews now.
December holidays and New Year
Christmas in Europe, New Year in Dubai and summer in Australia and New Zealand all collide in December. Schengen consulates and VFS centres see heavy demand from October. If you want Christmas markets, apply in September or early October. For Dubai, apply once your dates are fixed; prices and demand rise sharply around New Year.
Summer holidays (April to June)
This is the busiest season for Indian outbound travel. Schengen applications open six months ahead, so a June trip can be applied for from December. UK applications open three months ahead, so a June trip can be applied for from March. Students heading to the US, UK and Canada compete for the same appointment slots, so book biometrics early.
Booking flights: the non-refundable trap
Immigration New Zealand tells applicants plainly not to book non-refundable travel until the visa is approved. Treat that as the rule for every country. A refusal, or a decision that arrives a week late, can cost you the full fare and the hotel deposit.
- Most applications ask for a travel plan, not a paid ticket. Check your consulate's checklist; a reservation or itinerary is often enough.
- If you must buy early to lock a fare, pay a little more for a refundable or changeable ticket.
- Book hotels with free cancellation until your visa is in hand.
- For Schengen applications, your passport is held while the visa is processed. Do not plan another trip in that window.
- Use the Travlys visa cost calculator (travlys.com/visa-cost-calculator/) to add up government fees, service charges and appointment costs before you commit.
- If you are planning more than one Europe trip in a year, use the Schengen 90/180 calculator (travlys.com/schengen-calculator/) to check you stay within the limit.
Common timing mistakes
- Applying too early for Japan or Singapore: the visa can lapse before you fly, and you pay again.
- Treating the Schengen 15-day minimum as a target: it is the legal floor, not a plan. Slots, document requests and a possible extension to 45 days can wipe out a short buffer.
- Counting from the day you book the appointment: processing usually starts only after biometrics and a complete application.
- Ignoring passport validity: several countries, including Singapore, want at least six months from entry. Renew first if you are close. Indian passport fees went up on 1 July 2026, so budget for that.
- Forgetting that numbers move: US wait times, IRCC estimates and Home Affairs figures can change within weeks. Check again the week you apply.

Frequently asked questions
How early can I apply for a Schengen visa from India?
You can apply up to six months before your trip, and as a rule no later than 15 calendar days before it. The standard decision time is 15 days, which can stretch to 45 days if the consulate needs more checks or documents. Because appointment slots in India fill up before summer and Christmas, aim to apply six to eight weeks ahead at the latest.
How early can I apply for a UK visitor visa?
The earliest you can apply for a UK Standard Visitor visa is three months before you travel. GOV.UK says you will usually get a decision within three weeks of applying online, proving your identity and providing your documents. Apply as close to the three-month mark as you can, and at least six to eight weeks ahead in summer.
How long before travel should I apply for a US visa from India?
As early as possible, because the wait is for the interview appointment, not the decision. US State Department estimates for B1/B2 visitor interviews in India, as reported on 21 October 2026, ranged from about 7.5 months in Chennai to about 12 months in Mumbai. There is no fixed earliest date, so book the appointment as soon as you know you want to travel.
Can I apply for a Japan visa too early?
Yes. A Japanese single-entry visa is valid for three months from the date it is issued, not from your travel date. If you apply too early and travel after it expires, you must apply again. Apply within roughly the three months before your trip and allow at least five working days, plus extra time in busy months such as March and April.
Should I book flights before my visa is approved?
Do not buy non-refundable flights before your visa is approved. Immigration New Zealand says this directly, and the same logic applies everywhere: a refusal or delay can cost you the whole fare. Most applications need a travel plan, so use a flight reservation, a refundable fare or a fare hold until the visa is in hand.
How many days before travel should I apply for a Singapore visa?
Apply within 30 days before your arrival in Singapore, as ICA advises. Processing usually takes three working days, not counting the day you submit, though some applications take longer. Applying two to four weeks before travel is the sensible window. Your passport must be valid for at least six months from the date you enter Singapore.
