Is It Too Late for a Christmas or New Year 2026 Visa?

· 8 min read · By the Travlys visa team

For a departure around 20-27 December 2026, the window for Schengen, UK, Canada and Australia visas closes in November. Here are our apply-by dates for 17 destinations, and the visa-free options if you have left it late.

It is not too late for most destinations, but the long-haul visas need action in November. For a departure around 20-27 December 2026, submit Schengen, UK, Canada and Australia applications by mid-to-late November at the latest, while a first-time US visa is out of reach unless you already have an interview date. Thailand, Malaysia, the Maldives and Sri Lanka still work at short notice.

At a glance: Apply now: Canada and Australia (processing runs into weeks). Apply by about 20 November: Schengen, UK (standard), New Zealand. Apply by early December: Japan, Singapore, Georgia, Vietnam, UK priority. Online form only: Thailand, Malaysia, Maldives, Sri Lanka. Not realistic: first-time US visa. Dates below: Travlys estimates for a 20 December departure, not official deadlines.

Is it too late to get a visa for a Christmas or New Year 2026 trip?

No, for most countries, as long as you apply within the next three to four weeks. Countries with appointment-based visas, such as the Schengen states, the UK, Canada and Australia, need applications in November. E-visa and visa-free destinations in Asia still work in December.

How we worked out the apply-by dates

We took a departure of Sunday, 20 December 2026, the earliest date in the Christmas window. We then took each country's published processing time and added a buffer for appointment booking, courier return of the passport and the year-end rush. If you leave on 27 December, you have roughly a week more. These are Travlys estimates, not official deadlines. Processing times change weekly, so check the live figure on the official site listed for each country.

Apply-by dates by country

  • Schengen (France, Germany, Netherlands and others): apply by about 20 November. EU rules allow applications no later than 15 days before travel (5 December for a 20 December trip) and give a normal decision time of 15 days, which can stretch to 45. The real constraint is VFS appointment availability in December. Check: home-affairs.ec.europa.eu and the VFS site of the country you visit most.
  • UK: apply by about 20 November (standard), 4 December (priority). GOV.UK lists about 3 weeks for a Standard Visitor visa from outside the UK, counted in UK working days. Priority costs £500 extra for a decision in about 5 working days; super priority costs £1,000 extra for a decision by the end of the next working day, where your centre offers it. Check: gov.uk visa processing times.
  • USA: not realistic for first-timers. Recent reports of State Department data put the next B1/B2 interview at roughly 6 to 12 months away across Indian posts. Only consider it if you already hold an interview date in November or early December. Check: travel.state.gov global visa wait times.
  • Canada: apply now, by 5 November at the latest. IRCC's processing-time data, updated 29 October 2026, shows 31 days for a visitor visa applied from India, plus time to give biometrics and return your passport. Fees are CAD 100 plus CAD 85 for biometrics. Check: canada.ca processing times tool.
  • Australia: apply by about 7 November. Home Affairs data reported in September 2026 put 90% of Visitor (600) Tourist stream decisions at about 33 days; we could not open the official page to confirm today's figure. Allow time for biometrics too (see our post on Australia visa biometrics in India). Check: immi.homeaffairs.gov.au global visa processing times.
  • New Zealand: apply by about 22 November. Immigration New Zealand shows 80% of visitor visas decided within 2 weeks and warns that September to March is its busiest period. Check: immigration.govt.nz visitor visa wait times.
  • Japan: apply by about 1 December. Commercial guides report about 5 working days at VFS, longer in peak season. We could not open the Embassy of Japan's pages to confirm. Check: in.emb-japan.go.jp and the VFS Japan site.
  • Singapore: apply by about 4 December. Indians apply through an authorised visa agent or a Singapore mission, not at the airport. Agents commonly quote 3-5 working days, more in peak season. Submit the SG Arrival Card within 3 days before arrival. Check: ica.gov.sg.
  • UAE/Dubai: apply by about 8 December. Pre-arranged tourist visas usually take a few working days. Indians with a valid US visa or certain other visas and residence permits can get a visa on arrival instead; rules for UK visa holders have been reported differently, so confirm. Check: icp.gov.ae and gdrfad.gov.ae.
  • Vietnam e-visa: apply by about 4 December. Widely reported terms are about 3 working days, USD 25 single entry and USD 50 multiple entry, valid up to 90 days. We could not read evisa.gov.vn today, so confirm there. Phu Quoc island has its own visa-free rule.
  • Sri Lanka ETA: apply by about 10 December. The ETA is free for Indians from 25 May 2026, valid 30 days with double entry, but it is still compulsory before arrival. Check: eta.gov.lk.
  • Thailand: no visa needed. Indians get 30 days visa-free from 15 September 2026. Fill in the Thailand Digital Arrival Card within 3 days before arrival. Check: tdac.immigration.go.th.
  • Malaysia: no visa if you leave by 31 December. The exemption runs until 31 December 2026. If your trip runs into January 2027, apply for a Malaysian visa by about 27 November. Submit the MDAC within 3 days before arrival. Check: imi.gov.my.
  • Bali (Indonesia): e-VoA by about 13 December, or visa on arrival. Indians are eligible for visa on arrival, widely reported at IDR 500,000 for 30 days. Bali also charges a separate tourist levy of IDR 150,000. Check: evisa.imigrasi.go.id and lovebali.baliprov.go.id.
  • Maldives: no pre-approval. Maldives Immigration grants the tourist visa on arrival with no advance approval. Submit the free IMUGA traveller declaration up to 96 hours before arrival. Check: immigration.gov.mv.
  • Georgia e-visa: apply by about 27 November. The official FAQ lists USD 20 plus a 2% service fee and says a decision takes not less than 5 working days. Holders of some Western visas may not need one; confirm before applying. Check: evisa.gov.ge.
  • Türkiye: e-visa only with a valid Schengen, US, UK or Irish visa or residence permit. Otherwise you need a sticker visa through the Turkish mission, so apply by about 15 November. Check: evisa.gov.tr.

Common mistakes in the December rush

  • Waiting for an appointment in your home city only. Schengen and UK slots differ by city. A slot in Mumbai or Delhi two weeks earlier is often worth the travel.
  • Counting calendar days, not working days. UK and Japan times are in working days. Consulates and visa centres also close for local holidays around 25 December and 1 January.
  • Booking non-refundable flights first. Immigration New Zealand advises against booking non-refundable travel before the visa is approved. The same logic applies everywhere.
  • Forgetting the arrival forms. Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, the Maldives and Bali all have online arrival forms. They are free on the official portals; avoid paid lookalike sites.
  • Planning Schengen days loosely. If you hold a multiple-entry Schengen visa from an earlier trip, check your remaining days with the Travlys Schengen 90/180 calculator.

Already too late? Go visa-free or e-visa

If your Schengen or UK appointment is not coming through, switch destinations rather than gamble. Thailand (30 days visa-free) and Malaysia (visa-free if you leave by 31 December) need only an arrival card. The Maldives grants the visa at the airport, and Sri Lanka needs only the free ETA. Bali, Vietnam and Georgia need a quick online visa. If you hold a valid US, UK or Schengen visa, the UAE visa on arrival and Türkiye e-visa also open up.

Who should still try for a long-haul visa: travellers with a confirmed appointment in November, a clean travel history and flexible dates. Who should switch: anyone without an appointment by mid-November, families with fixed school-holiday dates, and first-time US applicants.

To compare total costs, use the Travlys visa cost calculator. Our guide on when to apply for a visa by country gives the normal lead times for the rest of the year, and the visa checker at travlys.com/visa-checker/ will answer "Do Indians need a visa?" for each destination.

Frequently asked questions

Is it too late to get a Schengen visa for Christmas 2026?

Not yet, but it is close. EU rules let you apply up to 6 months ahead and no later than 15 days before travel, and a decision normally takes 15 days, sometimes up to 45. For a 20 December departure, aim to submit by about 20 November. The real limit is finding a VFS appointment, so book the earliest slot in any city now.

Can I still get a UK visitor visa before Christmas?

Yes, if you act in November. GOV.UK says most Standard Visitor decisions take about 3 weeks after your biometrics appointment. Priority (£500 extra, about 5 working days) and super priority (£1,000 extra, end of the next working day) can help if your visa application centre offers them. For a 20 December departure, submit by about 20 November on standard service.

Can I get a US visa for a December 2026 trip?

Realistically, no, unless you already have an interview date. Recent reports of the State Department's wait-time data put the next B1/B2 interview at several months to about a year away at Indian posts. Check the official wait-time tool on travel.state.gov for your city, and plan a US trip for 2027 instead.

Which countries can Indians visit at the last minute for New Year?

Thailand (30 days visa-free), Malaysia (visa-free until 31 December 2026), the Maldives (visa on arrival with no pre-approval) and Sri Lanka (free ETA) need only online forms. Bali works with a visa on arrival or e-VoA. Vietnam, Georgia and the UAE e-visas take a few working days, so they still work if you apply in early December.

Are these apply-by dates official deadlines?

No. They are Travlys estimates built from each country's published processing times plus a safety buffer for appointments, courier time and the holiday rush. Official rules only set limits such as the Schengen 15-day minimum. Processing times change week to week, so check the live figure on the official site the day you apply.

What happens if my visa does not arrive before my flight?

You cannot board without it, and most airlines will not refund a non-refundable fare because a visa was late. Book refundable or changeable tickets until the visa is in hand. New Zealand's immigration service, for example, advises travellers not to book non-refundable travel until the visa is approved.
